Blog Arctic Circle Trail 2026

Blog day 11

Sisimiut!

At lunchtime today we reached Sisimiut after three hours of fast hiking. The weather is fantastic, and all are looking forward to a fresh cup of coffee, and a shower.

Tallied up, the trip was 161km and 6800 altitude meters in total.

Blog day 10

Our last full day!

Tomorrow we will reach Sisimiut, but we still had a long way to go this morning. It was a beautiful sunset yesterday, as well as sunrise this morning. One of our favorite camp spots.

After a coffee and breakfast we started out down towards a big lake. The weather was nice, and the trail was good, so with light backpacks we flew down the mountain.

Down by the lake we saw plenty of Arctic Char, in the shallows close to the beach. Morten waded out, and almost caught one with his bare hands, it’s an amazing experience to see the big chars so up close.

After lunch we started the trips final uphill, a 400m climb, with the fjord behind us, the view was very nice. We made camp after 19.5km. In the last mountain pass of the trip. Tomorrow we have approx 10km to Sisimiut, and will get there by lunchtime.

Blog day 9

It was northern lights again this night. Anja, Jannick and Marit were outside and took photos. We also had a polar fox puppy visit camp.

After a long day yesterday we slowed down our pace, and hiked only 7 km before lunch. The landscape changed from lush green valleys to rocky and sandy hills and gully’s. We passed through two passes today, and in both the fjords and mountains opened up and offered spectacular views.

We ended the day passing a big arctic char lake, before a long uphill. In total 15km and 900 altitude meters.

Blog day 8

We woke up to thick fog today, and could barely see each others tents. It did not last long however, and in just half an hour of hiking all the fog was gone and the clear skies was back.

Most of the day was spendt high up, in a barren and rocky landscape, with clear lakes and steep mountains. The wind was quite cold, so we had to we’re more clothes than normal, but we found a nice and sheltered lunch spot, and the wind dropped shortly after.

The rest of the day we hiked down a green and lush valley towards the small village Sarfannguaq. Before finishing the day with a monster uphill. We are now camped with a view of the fjord and all are getting their well deserved rest.

Blog day 7

It was a misty and frosty morning. At 8 the sun finally hit our tents and warmed a little. Marit saw northern lights during the night, so this night we are hoping for clear weather so that the rest of us can wake up and look for some aswell.

The day started with an uphill, and the hills just didn’t stop. In total we climbed 950 meters, safe to say we were happy to reach camp.

We have had great views, seen the bones of three musk ox, and had the pleasant company of hundreds of flies parts of the day.

Now we are camped at 300 m.a.s.l, with the view of the fjord, next to a big lake, some of us have taken a swim, and we are sitting outside in the sun enjoying dinner and snacks.

Blog day 6

Today was a long day. Over 19km, we are all quite tired now that the tents are finally up.

It was frost tonight. So when we woke up, ice had formed all the smal lakes around camp. The sun was up however, with clear skies, and the temperature quickly rose. The first hours we hiked up and down steep cliffs in the mountains, until, right before lunch, the huge valley with Oles Lakseelv came into view. Absolutely amazing.

We had lunch overlooking the river, before we hiked down the mountain crossed the river and headed towards the fjord. We are now camped on a small patch of flat ground sounded by thick bushes, at the river mouth.

Blog day 5

Yet another fantastic day in the arctic.

We hiked 17km today, longest distance so far. Mainly because the trail was in better condition than the past days. The landscape is massive around us, with big lakes and tall mountains.

It’s perfect hiking temperature, Sunny, but not too warm. After lunch the wind dropped too, so when we passed a beautiful sandy beach, we took a swim in the lake. The Norwegians were surprised how warm it was, and the danish, were surprised how cold it was.

Now in camp, we are stretching sore muscles, and enjoying our snacks.

Blog day 4

It was a late evening for some of us yesterday, waiting for the sunset. We were camped 500 meters above sea level, with an amazing view.

The sunrise this morning was equally spectacular, and we even had a snow hare, Ukalek in Greenlandic visiting us as we packed down camp.

It has been clear skies, and a nice breeze all day. We hiked 15km with 560 altitude meters. The landscape is dry and sandy, along with the crystal clear blue water, one could almost imagine we were on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

We found plenty of musk ox wool today, but still have not seen any. Curious reindeer however we have had very close. We are now camped at the end of a big lake, hoping for the wind to drop so that we can take a swim.

Blog day 3

It was a little colder tonight, but we all slept very well it was some fog outside, but it was certain as soon as we stepped out that it would be a nice day today.

We left the main trail a little before lunch, and have hiked most of the day high above the lakes. The views are stunning, behind us we can see all the way to the icecap 60km away, and ahead we see the mountains around Sisimiut.

We did 800 meters of climbing in total, over 15km, so we were all happy when we found a small lake where we could camp. The views are still amazing, so we are sitting outside, enjoying dinner with the valleys, lakes and mountains below and around us.

Blog day 2

It was a calm and quiet night tonight, apart from a polar fox visiting tripping in the guylines and waking us.

We tok it nice and slow today, and enjoyed the scenery, plenty of Caribou was around, and we had some quite close as well, however we have not seen any musk ox yet. Crossing our fingers we will see some the next days.

We finished the day with a river crossing, and the water was actually quite pleasant, with good weather forecasted the next days, there will probably be some swimming in the lakes.

We are camped on soft dwarf birch next to a lake, it’s little wind, +15, and we are enjoying dinner outside.

Blog day 1

We woke up after a long night sleep. It was nice for those of us who had been up for 20+ hours yesterday.

Jannick, Anja and Marit joined a daytrip to point 660, and the Greenlandic Icesheet.

at 1700 we will start our trip, with a short car ride and hike for an hour or two until we find a nice camp for the night.
